When players create a character in Elder Tale, they must select a main class (メイン職業, mein shokugyō?, lit. main occupation). Along with the player's chosen race and subclass, this decision will affect what kind of skills they can obtain.
Overview[]
There are twelve main classes split into four groups:
- Warrior (戦士, senshi?)
- Weapon Attack (武器攻撃, buki kōgeki?, also translated as Weapon-based)
- Recovery (回復, kaifuku?)
- Magic Attack (魔法攻撃, mahō kōgeki?)
These four types roughly correlate to the Tank, Damage-Per-Second (DPS), and Healer roles common to most MMORPGs. In Elder Tale, the DPS roles are split into two groups that differentiate between physical and magical damage.
Each class type contains three classes. The available classes may vary depending on the server's localized classes. The classes introduced on this page are the ones available on the Yamato server, as it is the setting of the main story.
Once a character is created, their class and race cannot be changed. However, subclasses are flexible and can be changed by completing certain quests and/or prerequisites.
People of the Earth do not follow the same class system that Adventurers do, instead having a "class" based on their occupation, and thus there are some unique ones that Adventurers cannot attain.

Regional Classes[]
Each of the thirteen public servers has its own set of 1–3 unique, localized classes. Although they are largely reskins of each other, servers have striven to make aspects of their localized classes unique.
Alternate classes for overseas servers were selected through a poll conducted by series author Mamare Touno.[1]

People of the Earth[]
Although the class and subclass system exist for People of the Earth, it works differently. Their "classes"—or rather, occupations—are not restricted to the twelve-class system that Adventurers are subjected to, and will change as their life situations change. For example, if a group of Earthlings with the "Nomad" occupation decide to establish a town on vacant land, their occupation changes to "Settler".
In the Log Horizon 2 anime, People of the Earth with unique occupations also have unique icons on their menu screens. (In the light novel and earlier parts of the anime, Earthlings have less detailed menu displays that do not display icons for their occupations.)

Trivia[]
- During the series' early days, Mamare originally adopted Cowboy as one of the North American server's regional classes at a fan's suggestion.[2][3] This was later overturned by the Overseas Class Poll.
