Phenel Tsuleu-Arde Cowen (フェーネル=ツレウアルド=コーウェン),[3][4] also spelled "Feynail," is a member of the Cowen family, the most prestigious dukedom in the Eastal League of Free Cities, by his marriage to Saraliya. The two have three children together: Risselthea, Raynesia, and Iselus.
Because Sergiad, the current Duke of Maihama, had no sons, Iselus will inherit his title. Until he comes of age, Phenel serves as his guardian.[1]
Appearance[]
Phenel is a middle age man wearing clothing that matches his statues.
Synopsis[]
Before the Catastrophe[]
Phenel came from an earldom in Maihama, and he met Saraliya when she became involved in the world of politics. She was the talented "Pearl of Eastal," while he was an up-and-coming young aristocrat who was a key figure in a flood control project in Maihama.[5]
The two instantly fell in love and married shortly after, with Phenel being adopted into the Cowen family as Serjiad has no male heirs to inherit his title. Phenel and Saraliya had three children: Risselthea, Raynesia, and Iselus.[1] Risselthea eloped with a young knight, estranging her from the family and causing Saraliya to become even stricter with Raynesia. Phenel, while still rather curt with his daughter, seems to dote on her more than his wife does.
Return of the Goblin King arc[]
Phenel makes his only in-person appearance during The Return of the Goblin King, when he is informed of the sudden appearance of hordes of goblins that far outnumber the forces of the People of the Earth. He tells his daughter to remain at the Ancient Court of Eternal Ice with her grandfather, while he and the other nobles plan for the coming invasion.[3]
Noosphere arc[]
Neither Phenel nor Saraliya appear during this arc, despite the focus on Maihama. They are mentioned, however, during one of Serjiad and Isaac's talks, where Serjiad informs the Adventurer that Iselus would be his successor.
Trivia[]
- His birthday is August 19.[2]
- The first season of the anime has Phenel call Duke Serjiad his father, whereas he is Serjiad's son-in-law in the light novel. In season 2, this mistake is rectified after Isaac asks Serjiad about "his son."
