This article is about the role-playing subclass. For the class, see Samurai/Variations#Pirate.

Pirate is a role-playing subclass in Elder Tale. It is based on the Pirate class, which was replaced on the Yamato server by Samurai.[1]

As a subclass, Pirate was added to the Yamato server during the 2003 expansion pack, Silver Odyssey, which also added sea routes and naval combat.[2]

Overview[]

To change to the Pirate subclass, your main class level must be above 30. Certain pirate groups, such as the Noinouga Navy or the Octavia Navy, will approach you with a challenge such as "Defeat [aquatic monster] X times". After completing it and then beating a member of their group in a duel, you will be recognized as a true Pirate and will unlock the subclass.[2] A detailed article can be found about it in the “Theldesia Gazette Vol. 4”.

Some exclusive content is unlocked after obtaining this subclass, such as quests involving People of the Earth pirate groups, defending the seas from monsters, and the "Pirate King's Treasure" raid.

Before the Catastrophe[]

At its inception, many players flocked to unlock the subclass and experience the content added by the Silver Odyssey expansion pack. However, once the novelty wore off, people just as quickly switched to other subclasses that provided bonuses outside of water. However, a subset of dedicated Pirate fans remained, and the subclass still got its chance to shine from time-to-time when new maritime quests were added in updates.[2]

After the Catastrophe[]

Most People of the Earth who live inland had generally negative impressions of pirates as lawless plunderers, so for a while, Adventurers with the Pirate subclass were avoided. Because of the way the subclass quest worked, Adventurers with the subclass had connections to different nobles and private navies, and it was easy to get swept into power struggles.

With the invention of new ships like the Ocypete and the Spirit Ship Eagle, the situation at sea has been rapidly changing. Pirate groups have been interacting with Adventurers more, and Adventurer Pirates now play a role in various tasks, such as monster subjugation, capturing criminals, and exploring the seas.

While this class hasn't created any technological breakthroughs like the Production subclasses have, new potentials of this subclass are being researched. For example, its boosted combat abilities in water and on ships make them useful for sea exploration and for protecting merchant ships. Furthermore, aquatic monsters have high drop rates of food items, and they can fetch a good price on the market.[2]

Lore[]

Among People of the Earth, pirates are either rowdy criminals that pillage merchant ships and port cities, or organized mercenaries that keep the waters in their territory secure. The criminal majority usually attacks merchant ships and port towns to steal them, composed mostly of small groups operating sporadically in various zones. When a crew becomes big enough, it will either be targeted as a threat by local aristocrats or be considered as an independent state force controlling a part of the sea. As surprising as it can sound, Pirates who have established friendly relations with the ruling nobility of the land and have been granted autonomy have and still exist in Theldesia.

The Neunoga Navy[〈ノイノウガ水軍〉Noinouga Suigun] in the Neunoga Port[〈ノイノウガ港〉Noinouga-kō] and the Octavia Navy[〈オクタヴィア水軍〉Okutavia Suigun] operating around Octavia Island[〈オクタヴィア島〉Okutavia Shima] (real-life Hachijō-jima) in the Eastal League of Free Cities act as famous Pirates in Yamato. Moreover, one of the Nine Ninetails merchant families[〈ナインテイル 九 商家〉Nainteiru kyū shōka], the mercantile house that rules the LongCave/Longcape Naval Port[〈ロングケイブ軍港〉Rongukeibu gunkō], the Ryūzo family[リューゾ家 Ryūzo-ka], origins from a Pirate family and still retains a strong piratical nature nowadays.[2]

Known Skills[]

The Pirate’s skills are primarily divided in two types: combat-related skills and auxiliary ones. Also typical for these types of Role-playing subclasses, Pirates can get costumes to complete the look such as hats, caps and eyepatches.

  • Combat Bonuses: Gives bonuses while fighting on a ship or on a body of water.
    • Good Sailor: Boosts effectiveness against certain aquatic monsters.[2]
  • Supportive: Special skills that are useful outside of combat, such as operating ships, reading maps, and treasure hunting.
