Precant (祈り手, Inori-te?, literally translates to Prayer Hand) is a role-playing subclass in Elder Tale.

Description[]

Precants offer prayers and perform rituals, but have no tie to any particular religion as they cover “all simple, indigenous or unclassified beliefs”. As a result, while regional subclasses will be more powerful in their region, Precants have the same effectiveness regardless of where they are and are more numerous than any other clerical subclass.[1]

In Yamato, Precants are mainly in charge of conducting ceremonies like weddings, funerals and other rituals in medium-sized or smaller towns and villages. While there are more powerful clerical positions, like the Astrologer and the Talismancer, these two subclasses are more distant from the faith of the common people and strongly connected to some kind of power or organizations, such as the Saiguu family in Westelande. The Precant is then a local form of clergy who have blended with the people. Even if there is no ritual to perform, people often consult them and treat them with a certain amount of respect.

The Precant, like the Mercenary, the Knight or the War Priest, has been a subclass available to Adventurers since the early days of Elder Tale. It was initially similar to the War Priest until some updates made the War Priest’s prayers more self-reinforcing and solo-oriented and the Precant’s more supportive and party-oriented, effectively differentiating the two subclasses. One unique feature of Yamato’s Precants is their ability to wear kimonos. While the clothes change only the skin and don’t serve as game equipment, they are very popular among role players. Earthling Precants in Yamato are often dressed as shrine maidens/mikos or with priestly uniforms.
